This house style centred around a symbol which was variously interpreted: we intended it as a reference to the Derbyshire Peaks but one member of the college staff assumed it was inspired by oscilloscope traces and another believed it to be an indication of his institution's determination to rise above the uniformly average; we encouraged these perceptions with equal enthusiasm, though we preserved a discreet silence over a further suggestion that it represented an intellectual equivalent of the multiple orgasm.
