When we were working with Fay Godwin on her earlier publication, Land, it became clear that it was increasingly difficult to celebrate the British landscape without also becoming alarmed by the way in which it was suffering degradation. Our forbidden land was a passionate appeal for recognition of this state of affairs. In designing the book we felt it important to convey the polemical approach of the author visually while at the same time ensuring the very best display and printing of her photography: an art book and a protest book under one cover. Difficult.
